Extension to Listed Thatched Cottage in Thorverton

Contemporary Extension to Grade II Listed Thatched Cottage – Thorverton, Devon

Cherry Tree Cottage is a Grade II listed property in the heart of Thorverton, Devon. Originally built in the 17th century, the cottage retains its historic plan form despite significant internal modernisation. Its listing reflects both its architectural character and its relationship with the adjacent Berribridge House, together, they form a distinctive group of traditional thatched cottages. Historic records and local accounts suggest the two buildings may once have been part of a single row, adding depth to the site’s cultural significance.

Our brief was to design a sensitive yet contemporary extension that would enhance the home’s functionality for modern living while respecting its historic fabric. The new addition is deliberately distinct in form and detail, allowing the original cottage to remain visually legible and celebrated. At the same time, the extension draws subtle cues from the existing building, with white render chosen to echo the colour-washed cob of the original walls.

The rear extension introduces generous glazing and timber detailing, creating a light-filled living space that opens directly onto the garden. This new connection to the outdoors transforms the way the home is used, offering long views, improved natural light, and a sense of openness that contrasts beautifully with the intimacy of the original cottage interiors.

Internally, the extension supports a more flexible layout, enabling the family to enjoy open-plan living while preserving the character of the older rooms. Materials were chosen for their quality, sustainability, and compatibility with the listed structure, and the design was developed in close consultation with conservation officers to ensure compliance with planning and heritage requirements.

This project exemplifies our approach to listed buildings: thoughtful, respectful, and forward-looking. By clearly distinguishing new from old, we’ve created a harmonious dialogue between past and present; one that allows Cherry Tree Cottage to evolve without losing its soul.
