The brief for this project was to gain permission for the conversion of an existing listed office building to residential. The terrace of three townhouses at 38-40 Southernhay, Exeter, was constructed around 200 years ago. However, previous applications to convert the buildings to residential use had been unsuccessful because of the listed status. Living Space gained consent for a mixed use scheme to combine upgraded office space with the conversion of part of the building back to residential use. This also included an extension at the back of the terrace to replace a 1960’s block. The refurbishment programme included retrofitting the existing building alongside careful restoration to ensure there was no damage to the historic significance of the buildings, whilst giving them a new lease of life. The mix of uses includes offices, a restaurant, a flat and the new townhouse.
