Contemporary Design for New Homes in the South Hams
Two new contemporary houses in Elburton, on the edge of Plymouth in the South Hams.
The brief for this project was to create two stunning contemporary homes that worked well within their city edge setting near Elburton on the edge of South Hams District Council.
The site was originally a large garden with a steeply sloping edge, and the clients (both buidlers) wanted to create a pair of houses that reflected their own personalities, whilst having the same volume and very similar plans. The resultant houses are like brother and sister, with similarities in their form but a very different feel.
To break up the height of the front facade, high quality, contemporary materials were carefully chosen dividing the forms with self coloured render, zinc, and stone cladding on one house and copper, render and stone for the second.
The gardens are landscaped with access at ground level is created directly from the living spaces to the rear and from the parking to the front.
The material choices have really lifted the quality of these exceptionally finished homes – we’ve all got a different favourite in the office – which would you choose?
