Competition Entry – Extension to Durslade’s Farmhouse – Hauser & Wirth Gallery, Somerset

The Seed Shed aims to do away with the unnecessary. It is a simple, flexible space – a space for thoughts and ideas to develop from engagement with the surroundings.

Reclaimed or sustainable materials have been used thoughout, for example salvaged car tyres filled with gravel are proposed as the footings for the structure to negate thinned for high impact concrete foundations.

Internally, the bare warmth of plywood sheeting offers a natural soft homely stage for inhabitancy. Externally, the rustic black corrugated iron sheeting is an expression of the rural context, is low maintenance and contrasts with the solidity of the heavy historic stone nearby. Frugal building fabric choices have enabled the use of high performance aluminium windows which help to maximise energy efficiency and a wood burning stove provides a sustainable heat source.
